Powder Mill Park is another Monroe County park (380 acres) that is located northeast of Mendon Ponds. Powder Mill was name because it was a 'hidden' site for producing gunpowder in America's past. A water wheel remains in the park, as does a trout hatching pond. This county park has few habitat, but can contain decent birds at all seasons. All the woodpeckers and several swallow species have been seen in the park. Breeding warblers have included Blue and Golden-Wings, plus Chestnut-Sided. Also note that the Burroughs-Audubon Nature Club Wildlife Sanctuary that is just a few miles away through the backroads.
Directions: It is located out near Bushnells Basin and can be reached by taking the I-490 east out of the city, exit at Bushnells Basin onto NYS Route 96. Take NYS Route 96 east to Park Road. Powder Mill Park is off Park Road.
