Washington Premiere! Before culminating in the dramatic parting of the Red Sea, this epic Old Testament tale gets a 19th centure twist with a decidedly non-Biblical love story between the daughte of moses and the son of the Pharaoh. This washington premiere from opera's rococo period continues our cycle of Rossini sacred works at the cathedral. The oratorio Mose in Egitto of 1819, with its brilliant bravura arias and thundering choruses is sometimes confused with Rossini's later four-act opera, Moise. This two-act oratorio is a far more compact and dramatic work, which established Rossini as the preeminent Italian composer of his day. The production will showcase the cathedral's new Lively-Fulcher organ. A sonic spectacular!
