I have installed the NetWare 3.2 enhancement package. It will not allow me to access the Product Options. When I attempt to do this, I receive a dialogue box containing the message "Products.dat cannot be accessed. Press ESC to continue." Why is this?

Most likely, the BTRIEVE.TRN file is flagged "Read Only." If the BTRIEVE.TRN file is flagged "Read/Write," the error message will not occur.

I want to connect to the Novell network with Microsoft Client for NetWare in order to download Novell Client 3.2 to laptops. For some reason, I am not able to connect to the network. The system is configured with Windows 95 on an IBM 300GL with a 3C905BTX PCMCIA card and 16 MB of RAM.

This could be a protocol problem. Try changing the protocol setting to 802.3 should fix the problem.

I have a Novell NetWare server . Where can I locate the server license serial number?

The answer to that question depends upon the version of NetWare you have: NetWare 2.x- The serial number can be found on the diskettes or in the DEBOS.OBJ or NONDEDOS. OBJ files. NetWare 3.x- The serial number can be located on the license diskette as well as in SYSCON uner File Server Information. You must be logged in as a supervisor to access this information. NetWare 4.x- Type VERSION at the server console.

I am using PC Anywhere 2.0 for Windows 3.1- IBM Model/35- using QEMM as the memory manager. I performed a fresh install of the program and applied the 20up_E patch and tried to be a host while in Windows. But I keep getting the error: VPCAW.386 is not loaded. Why?

Check to see if QEMM386 has a switch for -NW3. More than likely, it does. This in an indication that the machine is not to be operated in enhanced mode. If you take the machine out of enhanced mode, PC Anywhere should run correctly.

Recently, some of our computers that have Windows 95 as the operating system and McAfee Virusscan installed on them are experiencing problems with their screen saver. When the screen saver turns on, it appears for one second and then stops, at which point, the system begins accessing either the A:\ drive or the hard drive. I tried removing and reinstalling the screen saver, but that did not help. Any other suggestions?

Deselect the Enable Scanning While In Screen Saver Mode, under Start, Settings, Control Panel, Display, then select the Screen Scan tab.

Is there a way I can get quick report that displays important server information?

Yes, There's a utility called CONFIG.NLM that gathers NetWare server configuration information. The information collected includes a list of loaded modules, NCF files, INET config file, speed rating, total RAM, set parameters, disk information, volume information, name space information, LAN information, and system files. When you run CONFIG.NLM, it creates a text file (CONFIG.TXT) in the SYS:SYSTEM directory that contains this information. You can download this useful utility from the Novell Web site at http://www.pcworld.com/r/tw/1%2C2061%2Ctw-nn0830%2C00.html

What does the COM or EDU mean in an Internet address?

Every URL (uniform resource locator) address includes one or two suffixes as part of the domain name. These URL suffixes provide quick information about the site. The suffix at the end of a URL represents the site's server type and can include a code that indicates the country of origin. For example, The Softmart address (www.softmart.com) ends in ".com", which indicates that Softmart’s Web site is a commercial business. The most common domain name suffixes on the Internet are: com - commercial business edu - educational institution gov - government agency mil – military net – miscellaneous org - non-profit organization In addition to domain name suffixes, international Web sites often include a code suffix that follows the domain name and that indicates the country the site is based in. U.S. Internet sites rarely use country code suffixes; in fact, these suffixes are optional for other countries. For example, the country code suffix for Japan is .jp, but a Web site in Japan can choose not to include this code. This Japanese site has .jp as the country code in its domain name http://www.jeida.or.jp/guide/toukei/index-e.html Here are some country code suffixes of countries with heavy Internet traffic: au - Australia br - Brazil ca - Canada fr - France hk - Hong Kong il - Israel in - India it - Italy mx – Mexico nl - Netherlands tw - Taiwan; uk - United Kingdom Microsoft maintains a good list of country code suffixes at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/challenge/countries.htm (NOTE: This site is subject to change.)

Which should I use when installing IntranetWare, the Simple or Custom Install?

The Simple install is the easiest to do, but may cause you problems in the future. A good rule of thumb for deciding is: If your network will consist of only one or two servers and fewer than 1,000 users, you'll need only one NDS container; if IPX is the only protocol you'll use, then you'll be fine using the Simple install. However, if you'll have multiple servers with more than 1,000 users, you'll need multiple NDS containers; if you plan to use TCP/IP, you should use the Custom install, which will give you much more control over the process.
