To Receive Your ACT! Database

Here are the General 5 Steps

1. Receive the email with the finished conversion.

2. Find the folder that contains your ACT! Database
    Download the Zip file in to that folder

3. Uncompress the files from inside the Zip file in to that folder
    Optional: Map the K: drive to that folder - if you have Attachments

4. Open up ACT!

5. File Open, and select your database

2. Find the folder that contains your ACT! Database
    Download the Zip file in to that folder

Extract the Database in to the folder that contains the ACT! Databases.
When you extract the database, remove the right-most folder name, and replace with the word "Databases" so that it extracts properly in to the correct folder.


3. Uncompress the files from inside the Zip file in to that folder

Data File

Description

ACTDemo.ADF ACT! Data File  - required
This contains your ACT! data

ACTDemo.ALF ACT! Log File  - required
This contains login information

ACTDemo.PAD (optional) Pointer to ACT! Database
Somewhat optional, Gets created automatically

wpe14.jpg (1194 bytes)

ACTDemo-database files  (optional) Folder of Templates, Reports, etc.
Optional - you would need to create these in 6.0

You may need to customize the ACT! PAD file to suit your drive and folder arrangement.


ACT! SQL  - the Microsoft SQL based versions of ACT!
ACT! 7.0 for 2005
ACT! 8.0 for 2006
ACT! 9.0 for 2007
ACT! 10.0 for 2008
ACT! 11.0 for 2009
ACT! 12.0 for 2010
ACT! 13.0 for 2011
etc.

NOTE: If you already have a database of a certain name, and wish to replace it with a version of the database, you will have to Detach the old Database first.

The new data format protects your company's data.  Unauthorized persons cannot do any of the following to your database file:

ACT! provides a "secret tool" for your organization's Database Administrator use.
It is not talked about very much, or on the ACT! menu, so every day users will not know how to detach.


1. Find the ACTDiag.EXE tool and launch it. 
    (It is called ACT7Diag.Exe for version 7, ACT8Diag.Exe for version 8, or simply ACTDiag.Exe)
2. Select the Databases tab
3. Select the database you want to send to us
4. Right click
5. Select Detach Database  (this will detach the ADF, ALF, and PAD files)

C:\Program Files\ACT\ACT for Windows\Databases  (or whatever the folder is on your system)


Linking to Attachments

Optional: Map the K: drive to that folder - if you have Attachments

ACT! must verify that the Attachments exist by name when it opens up. Otherwise it assumes

To ensure your Attachments can be linked to the "dummy documents" provided

We typically use the K: drive for this.  You can either "Map" or "Subst" the K: drive to any folder of your choice.  For example, go to Start, Programs, Run, then get to the "DOS" white on black window.  then type:

subst K: "C:\Documents and Settings\Your\My Documents\ACT\ACT for Windows 10\Databases\GM6toACT10-database files"


4. Open up ACT!

Click on the ACT! logo on your desktop, or select from the menu in the lower right corner of your screen
Start, Programs, ACT!


5. File Open, and select your database


6. Change the "ACT Admin" record to your desired User Name (optional)
